Let me tell you an open secret among women.
One of the oldest mechanics of influence operates inside couples every day: a wife who shapes what her husband thinks he wants. Most of us don't care much about getting credit, as long as things get done.
Jewish tradition has a formula for this:
אישה כשרה עושה רצון בעלה
isha kshera osah ratzon ba'alah
It is usually translated as: "a virtuous woman does her husband's will."
In hebrew the verb "does" comes from the root la'assot: to do, to make, to fabricate, to bring into existence.
She doesn't merely "follow" his will. She helps bring it into existence.
For millennia, women had no armies, limited property rights, little formal political authority, and rarely the power to coerce. So they developed a different kind of influence. The kind that operates upstream of the decision itself. So far upstream that by the time the decision arrives, it feels entirely one's own.
This mechanism sits at the heart of what we now call "cognitive warfare".
In a previous article, I argued that cognitive warfare is a struggle over the architecture through which reality becomes visible, intelligible and actionable.
But that diagnosis raises a deeper question.
Most theories of cognitive warfare still assume a duel, a "fight against" an adversary, a strategist trying to shape another person's representation of reality.
That model remains correct. States, intelligence services, corporations, political movements still deliberately work at engineering perception.
But it is not sufficient.
The foundations of our decisions are increasingly shaped by systems that sort, rank, personalize and circulate reality at scale. The cognitive worlds they produce are often not the ones anyone explicitly intended.
This is the transition this brief explores.
First, through a Soviet mathematician's theory or the art of shaping the foundations from which a person makes a decision.
Second, through René Girard and the emergence of algorithmic systems capable of producing similar effects without intelligence at the moment of execution, and eventually without any single actor intending the final cognitive result.
Third, through the problem this creates for cognitive defense and what an ancient tradition offer.
Let us begin with a driver, a map and a decision that feels free.
The mathematics of reflexive control
Picture a driver. You want him to turn right.
You can tell him: "Turn right." He knows what you want. He can resist.
Or you can change the map on his GPS. He looks at the map. Considers his options. Makes a decision. And turns right.
He did decide.
That is the point.
In 1967, a Soviet mathematician named Vladimir Lefebvre gave this second method a name, in Chapter III of Conflicting Structures.
The important word is foundations. Not the decision itself. The premises from which the decision will logically follow.
The other remains perfectly free and that is precisely what makes the method formidable.
A decision imposed on me, I can resist. A decision I have reached myself, I will defend!
Lefebvre was mathematizing something human beings had practiced for millennia. But the West largely discovered his work through a military lens and reduced reflexive control to something narrower: Soviet disinformation, psychological operations, propaganda.
No. Disinformation is one tool inside reflexive control, not its definition.
Lefebvre himself lists a much wider arsenal: feints, provocations, camouflage, and even the transmission of true information designed to make an adversary dismiss it as false.
Put it simply:
Propaganda targets what you believe.
Reflexive control targets the terrain on which you decide.
Which options you consider, at what perceived cost, with what urgency, in what order they reach you.
But this model contains an assumption so obvious in 1967 that it barely needed to be stated.
